Most local businesses start ranking higher in the Google Maps 3-Pack within 8 to 12 weeks of focused work. New profiles and businesses in crowded city markets usually take three to six months. How fast you move depends on your starting point, your competition, your distance from searchers and how consistently the work is done.
- Expect clear map movement in 8–12 weeks; competitive markets and new profiles take 3–6 months.
- My own campaigns: a cash home buyer and a roofer both reached strong 3-Pack coverage in about four months; an electrician starting from nothing took six.
- You rank differently from every street in your area, so measure with a GeoGrid scan, not one search from your desk.
- Five things decide your speed: starting point, competition, distance, profile history and consistency.
- No change after three months usually means something specific is blocking you.
It's one of the first questions any business owner asks about local SEO. The honest answer is "it depends", but that's not useful on its own. So here's what it depends on, with real numbers from campaigns I've run.
How long does it take to rank in the Google Maps 3-Pack?
It takes most businesses 8 to 12 weeks to see clear movement in the Google Maps 3-Pack, and three to six months to reach consistent top-3 positions in competitive markets. Here's how that usually breaks down:
| Your situation | Typical time to clear movement | Typical time to consistent top-3 |
|---|---|---|
| Established profile with reviews, needs optimizing | 4–8 weeks | 2–4 months |
| Established profile in a crowded city market | 8–12 weeks | 4–6 months |
| Brand-new or recently verified profile | 2–3 months | 4–6 months or more |
| Small town, low competition | A few weeks | 1–3 months |
These are ranges from my campaigns and published industry estimates, not guarantees. Anyone promising a #1 spot by a fixed date is guessing.
What is the Google Maps 3-Pack?
The Google Maps 3-Pack is the block of three local business listings, with a map, that Google shows above the regular search results for local searches like "plumber near me" or "dentist in Tampa". It's also called the local pack or map pack. Clicking "More places" opens the Local Finder, a longer list of businesses ranked the same way. Google Maps itself ranks results slightly differently again, leaning more on distance.
The 3-Pack is one of three places local SEO helps you show up. See what is local SEO and how it works.

What does "ranking in the 3-Pack" actually mean?
Ranking in the 3-Pack means appearing in the top three for a search made from a specific spot, because results change depending on where the searcher is standing. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so the same search can show you at #1 near your office and at #15 five miles away.
That's why I never report a single ranking. A GeoGrid scan checks your position from dozens of points across your service area, so "ranking in the 3-Pack" becomes a measurable share of your area. Here's how to read a GeoGrid scan, and why you might rank at your office but not 2 miles away.
What do real campaign timelines look like?
Real campaign timelines from my own work show that four to six months is a realistic window for strong 3-Pack coverage:
| Business | Starting point | Time | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash home buyer, Oak Creek, WI | Invisible across 90% of the grid | 4 months | Average map rank 20.23 → 1.53; out-of-map area 90% → 0% |
| Roofer, Scottsdale, AZ | 0% top-of-map coverage | 4 months | 49% top-of-map coverage; direction requests +48.2% |
| Roofer, Columbia, PA | Established, under-optimized | 6 months | All 11 tracked searches up; calls +126% |
| New electrician, La Puente, CA | Zero online presence | 6 months | 2 → 28 calls a month |
The pattern: the business starting from nothing took the longest, and the established businesses with the right fixes moved fastest.

What speeds up or slows down 3-Pack rankings?
Five things speed up or slow down 3-Pack rankings:
- Your starting point. A profile with the wrong primary category, missing services or wrong hours can jump quickly once fixed. Primary category was the #1 local pack factor in the Whitespark 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors, and being open at the time of search ranked #5.
- Competition. A plumber in a big metro competes with dozens of established profiles with hundreds of reviews. A niche service in a small town might compete with three.
- Distance. Your verified address sets where you rank best. The further the searcher is from it, the more relevance and reviews you need to show up.
- Profile history. New profiles take longer to build trust. So do profiles recovering from a suspension or a recent move.
- Consistency. A steady flow of reviews, photos and fixes beats one burst of activity followed by nothing. Review recency ranked #11 and a sustained review flow ranked #14 in Whitespark's survey.
What happens month by month?
Month by month, a well-run campaign usually follows this shape:
| Stage | What happens | What you'll see |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–2 | Audit, competitor check, baseline GeoGrid scan | Nothing yet; this is the starting picture |
| Month 1 | Fix categories, services, name, hours, NAP, landing page | Early movement near your address |
| Months 2–3 | Reviews, citations, local links, content | Clear movement; coverage spreads outward |
| Months 3–6 | Keep building; expand to secondary keywords | Consistent top-3 in more of your area |
| Ongoing | Protect positions, add new areas | Rankings hold and compound |
That timeline is why most local SEO runs as a monthly retainer. See local SEO retainer vs one-time project.
How can you get into the 3-Pack faster?
You can get into the 3-Pack faster by fixing the highest-impact items first:
- Correct your primary category and add every relevant secondary one. See how to choose your Google Business Profile categories.
- Tick every predefined service Google offers for your categories.
- Set accurate hours, including holidays, and extend real hours if you can.
- Start a steady review system. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Fix the page your profile links to: service and city in the title tag and H1, matching name, address and phone.
- Report spam competitors with fake names or addresses. See how to report fake Google Maps listings.
My Google Business Profile checklist ranks every item by impact.

Why aren't you in the 3-Pack after months of work?
If you're not in the 3-Pack after three months of consistent work, something specific is usually blocking you:
- Wrong primary category compared with the businesses that rank.
- Your verified address is far from the searchers you're targeting.
- A suspension, duplicate listing or verification problem is limiting visibility. See why your Google Business Profile might be suspended.
- Spam competitors with keyword-stuffed names are taking the top spots.
- You're measuring from one location and missing progress elsewhere.
- Your business is closed when people search, so it's filtered out.

Are AI results changing the 3-Pack?
AI results are starting to change the 3-Pack. Semrush reports that Google has been testing AI-powered local packs with AI-generated summaries, though they haven't rolled out everywhere. The same signals still matter: a strong profile, real reviews and consistent business information. More in GEO explained.
FAQ
How long does it take a new Google Business Profile to rank?
A new Google Business Profile usually takes two to three months to show clear movement and four to six months or more to rank consistently in the top 3, depending on competition.
Can a service-area business rank in the 3-Pack?
A service-area business can rank in the 3-Pack. Its rankings are based on its hidden verified address. See service-area business vs storefront businesses in local SEO.
Do more reviews make you rank faster?
More reviews help you rank faster when they arrive steadily over time. A sudden burst followed by nothing helps less than a few new reviews every month.
Can I pay Google to get into the 3-Pack?
You can't pay Google to rank in the organic 3-Pack. Ads can appear above or inside it, labeled "Sponsored", but they're separate from organic rankings.
Why do my 3-Pack rankings go up and down?
Your 3-Pack rankings go up and down because of where the searcher is, whether you're open at that moment, competitor changes and Google updates. That's why trends over weeks matter more than any single check.
